LINCOLN, Neb. -- Behind a two-home run performance from Cole Caruso, the University of Michigan baseball team defeated Nebraska 3-1 on Sunday afternoon (May 11) at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park to take the series finale.
Michigan (31-19, 14-12 Big Ten) was led by Tate Carey, who tossed six scoreless innings in a no-decision. Carey scattered five hits and two walks while striking out two. Caruso hit his 10th home run of the season in the second inning and added his 11th in the ninth. Four other Wolverines recorded hits in the win.
Nebraska (26-25, 13-13 Big Ten) opened the bottom of the first with a one-out double, but a heads-up unassisted double play by Mitch Voit ended the threat. With two outs in the second, Caruso launched a solo homer to left field to give Michigan an early 1-0 lead.
Carey worked around a leadoff walk in the second and retired the side again in the third, stranding a two-out single. Robert Hamchuk doubled to begin the third and Greg Pace Jr. walked, but Michigan left both runners stranded.
Nebraska threatened in both the fifth and sixth innings with multiple runners on base, but Carey induced a groundout and three flyouts, respectively, to keep the Huskers off the board.
Jeter Ybarra singled in the seventh—Michigan's first hit since the third—but the Wolverines couldn't capitalize. Will Rogers (5-2) took over in the bottom half, opening with a strikeout. After a groundout, the next three Huskers reached, including a run-scoring error that tied the game at 1-1.
Keegan O'Hearn walked to open the eighth, followed by a bunt single from Pace. Benny Casillas added a bunt and reached on an error, loading the bases. Brayden Jefferis then dropped down a bunt single of his own to score O'Hearn and give Michigan a 2-1 lead.
Rogers pitched out of trouble in the bottom of the eighth, stranding two more Huskers. In the ninth, Caruso added an insurance run with his second solo homer of the day. Rogers finished the game by working around a walk in the bottom of the ninth, sealing the win with a strikeout and a flyout.
Michigan returns home to begin a four-game homestand to close out the regular season, starting Tuesday (May 13) against Wisconsin-Milwaukee. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will stream live on B1G+.
