LINCOLN, Neb. -- David Lally Jr. threw 8.1 strong innings at Nebraska, but the University of Michigan baseball team lost 5-2 in walk-off fashion to the Cornhuskers on Saturday afternoon (May 10) at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.
Michigan (31-18, 14-11 Big Ten) got a great start from Lally, who scattered just five hits and one walk while striking out four. He was charged with four runs, all coming from home runs. Offensively, Mitch Voit was responsible for two of Michigan's five hits with a double and a triple and scored a run. Benny Casillas hit his third home run of the season.
Lally was efficient early, getting through the first three innings on just 25 pitches -- using just eight to set Nebraska down in the second inning.
In the fourth inning, Voit hit a one-out triple and came home on the next pitch when Jeter Ybarra hit a sacrifice fly to left field. Lally pitched a 1-2-3 inning, again using just eight pitches in the frame.
The Cornhuskers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer down the left-field line that was challenged by Michigan and ultimately upheld after video review. Casillas immediately answered in the top of the sixth with his third home run of the season, a solo shot to right.
U-M went down in order in the eighth inning, and Lally matched it with a 1-2-3 inning, recording his fourth strikeout.
A flyout opened the ninth inning, but the next two Husker batters reached base on free passes, forcing a call to the bullpen. Dylan Vigue took the mound, and Nebraska took the first pitch it saw over the wall in right field for a walk-off win.
Michigan wraps up its three-game series against the Cornhuskers at 11:30 a.m. CT on Sunday (May 11) and Haymarket Park. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
