ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning without registering a hit to defeat Oakland 8-7 on Wednesday (April 9) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (19-14) trailed 7-6 entering the bottom of the tenth inning. Five of the six batters in the inning drew walks, with Tyler Inge and Jonathan Kim scoring the tying and winning runs, respectively, to walk off the Golden Grizzlies.
Brayden Jefferis started the third inning by reaching on a fielder's choice, and Benny Casillas advanced to third on an error. A single from Mitch Voit brought Casillas around to score, and a sacrifice fly from Colby Turner scored Jefferis to put U-M up 2-0.
Michigan added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff single from Noah Miller. Inge drew a walk, and a sacrifice bunt moved the runners over. Casillas singled to score both runners and scored himself on a groundout from Turner to go ahead 5-0.
The bullpen took over for Michigan in the fifth and allowed two runs after a hit-by-pitch, error, and single opened the inning. U-M got one run back in the fifth after a leadoff walk from Jeter Ybarra. A sacrifice bunt from Inge moved Ybarra to second, and he came around to score on a single from Casillas. Oakland got another run back in the sixth and added another in the seventh, bringing the score to 6-4.
Michigan's bats cooled off, tallying just one hit over the sixth and seventh, while the Golden Grizzles got single runs in the sixth and seventh and a pair in the eighth to knot the contest at six.
Michigan went scoreless from the sixth through the ninth, with a clutch scoreless top of the ninth from Max Debiec holding Oakland scoreless to give U-M a chance in the bottom half.
Oakland took the lead in the 10th on a pair of hits and an error, but Will Rogers (3-2) got the final two outs of the inning to strand the bases loaded.
The Wolverines had 13 hits, with Casillas leading them with three, two runs and three RBI. Turner also had three RBI, including the walk that brought Kim home. On the mound, Michigan used six pitchers, with Cade Connolly drawing the start and going four scoreless innings while striking out five.
