ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A complete-game shutout from David Lally Jr. and a four-RBI game from Benny Casillas helped lead the University of Michigan baseball team to a 10-0 seven-inning win over Mount Saint Mary's 10-0 on Friday afternoon (April 11) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Lally (3-3) allowed just three baserunners, scattering two hits, walking one -- with one runner reaching on a first-inning error -- and striking out five to earn the win. Casillas hit a pair of two-run singles to account for his four RBI, while Greg Pace Jr. went 4-for-4 with three doubles and the walk-off single, one of three RBI on the day.
Mount St. Mary's (14-18) opened the game reaching on an error, but the baserunner was caught stealing by Matt Spear during the next at-bat as Lally kept the Mountaineers off the board.
Lally no-hit the Mountaineers for the first three innings before giving up a leadoff single in the fourth. He retired the next three batters on seven pitches to maintain Michigan's 1-0 lead, which came courtesy of a second-inning Jeter Ybarra home run to center field, his fourth of the season.
Michigan (20-14) added to its lead in the fifth when a leadoff walk from Spear and a Pace double put runners in scoring position with no outs. Casillas came through with a two-run single to put Michigan ahead 3-0.
In the sixth, the Mountaineers had their best scoring chance, putting two on with one out, but Lally induced a groundout and foul out to get out of the jam. Michigan added insurance in the sixth inning, scoring four runs. Ybarra and Will Rogers scored on Pace's third double, while Spear and Pace scored on a Casillas single for a 7-0 advantage.
Lally returned to the mound for the seventh and pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out the final two batters. The Wolverines ended the game with three runs in the seventh. Rogers doubled home Tyler Inge and Ybarra, who scored Pace's walk-off single.
Michigan will return to Ray Fisher Stadium on Saturday (April 12) at 2 p.m. for game two against Mount St. Mary's -- the program's 5,000th game. The contest will be streamed live on B1G+.
