STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan baseball team defeated Penn State, 9-6, in come-from-behind fashion on Saturday afternoon (March 23) at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to even the three-game series.
Michigan (8-15, 1-1 Big Ten) had five different players tally two hits in the game and three players tally two runs. Stephen Hrustich had two RBIs and hit a home run along with Collin Priest. Kurt Barr earned his third win of the season with six innings and allowed five hits and struck out four. Will Rogers earned the first save of his career with three scoreless innings in relief.
Penn State (12-8, 1-1 Big Ten) opened the game with a leadoff double and scored on a sacrifice fly. The Wolverines took the lead in the top of the second with a three-run inning. Priest led off with a home run before back-to-back singles from Rogers and Dylan Stanton. Rogers scored on the Stanton single and Stanton scored on a sacrifice fly from Cole Caruso. PSU got one run back in the bottom of the inning with another sacrifice fly.
Hrustich led off the third inning with a home run. Priest followed with a single and scored on a groundout from Kyle Dernedde. The Nittany Lions however managed to take the lead with a four-run bottom of the third inning. With two outs and two runners on base, Penn State strung together three hits for four runs to take a 6-5 lead after three innings.
The next three innings settled down as the score remained the same. Michigan tallied a hit in each inning, but could not tie the game. Barr retired the next nine batters he faced in order.
In the top of the seventh, the first four U-M batters reached -- and all scored, allowing U-M to retake the lead. Mitch Voit led off the inning with a double. Hrustich singled and Voit scored before Priest was hit by a pitch. Rogers doubled and scored one before an error on the throw to third went into the stands and allowed Priest and Rogers to score.
Rogers took the mound and retired the first two batters he faced. Two Penn State players reached on singles, but a groundout to second base ended the seventh inning with the score 9-6. A double play helped Rogers escape a jam in the eighth. Penn State could not put anything together in the ninth as Rogers fired a 1-2-3 inning to earn the first save of his career.
The Wolverines will wrap up the series against Penn State on Sunday (March 24) with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will stream live on B1G+. Â
