BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Caylie McMahon earned seven saves, including one on a third-quarter penalty stroke, to lead the No. 15-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to 2-0 win at Indiana on Friday afternoon (Sept. 29) at Deborah Tobias Field. It was the Wolverines' first Big Ten Conference win this season and their fourth shutout win.
The Wolverines (6-4, 1-2 Big Ten) struck quickly, converting on a pair of penalty corners early and late in the first quarter. Michigan poured on the pressure in the opening minutes of the game, holding IU inside its defensive 25 for the first three minutes before capitalizing on its first corner of the game at the 2:56 mark. Freshman Kelsey Reviello buried the direct shot from the left side of scoring arc, with an assist from senior Lora Clarke on the insert, for her fifth goal in six games.
Fellow freshman Juliette Manzur scored U-M's second goal -- also her second of the season -- out of a scrum in front following another penalty corner. Senior Erin Reilly's initial shot was deflected high, an Indiana defender reached back to bat it out of the air on the goal line, but Manzur responded in kind, getting her stick on the rebound in the air and tipping it back into the cage.
Michigan withstood heavy IU pressure late in the third quarter, turning away three consecutive penalty corners with just three defenders after a false start kicked one out of the cage. McMahon earned saves on the latter two, then came up with a huge stop on a Hoosier penalty stroke with just :07 on the clock. Indiana (4-6, 0-3 Big Ten) drew the stroke off a fast break into the circle, but McMahon went with the shot to her stick side to make the save.
McMahon preserved the shutout in the final minute of the fourth quarter, stopping the initial shot and rebound to earn two more saves on a late Indiana penalty corner. The Wolverine goalkeeper owns three complete-game shutouts on the season.
Indiana outshot the Wolverines 11-7, including a 9-1 differential in the second half, and outcornered them 6-3. Hoosier goalkeepers Arabella Loveridge and Shannon McNally combined for three saves.
The Wolverines will wrap up the weekend road trip with an 11 a.m. CDT slate at No. 3 Northwestern on Sunday (Oct. 1) at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
