ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Seniors Joel Harrison and Marc Ybarra of the University of Michigan men's soccer team were both named to the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District first team on Thursday (June 3).
Both now will move forward onto the national ballot, with the Academic All-America teams to be announced in July.
This is the second time Harrison has earned the honor, as he was a second-team Academic All-American in 2019. A first-team All-Big Ten Conference selection this season, Harrison played and started in seven games before a season-ending injury against Indiana on March 27. He is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, and his other academic honors include being a 2018 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and two-time U-M Athletic Academic Achievement recipient. Harrison recently announced he will use an extra year of eligibility and return to the pitch next fall. He is a 2021 MLS SuperDraft pick of the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The Big Ten Midfielder of the Year, Ybarra is also set to return for a fifth season this coming fall. Last month he was named to the Senior CLASS All-America first team after being one of 10 finalists for the award. A two-time All-Big Ten selection, Ybarra was a United Soccer Coaches all-region pick in 2019. He is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and has two U-M Athletic Academic Achievement honors. Ybarra had two goals and six assists this season. He ranks second all-time at Michigan in assists with 22 and adds six goals for 34 points in 73 matches.
To be eligible, nominated student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average in his second year at the current institution and must have played in at least 50 percent of the team's games.
