EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell 19-10 to No. 2 Northwestern to close out the road portion of its 2021 regular-season schedule Sunday (April 18) at Martin Stadium.
Senior Molly Garrett scored six goals and sophomore Mariah Sweeney made a career-best 14 saves for the Wolverines in just her second career start. Senior Caitlin Muir added three assists and one goal for a four point day, and Kaitlyn Mead had two assists.
Erin Daly led Michigan on the draw control with six wins, while Kaley Thompson had three and Garrett had two.
Northwestern opened up the game on an 8-1 run before Michigan rattled off three straight goals in the closing minutes of the first half and cut the deficit to five goals at 9-4, heading into the locker room at halftime.
Garrett completed the hat trick a minute and a half into the second half to cut the Wildcats lead to four, but Northwestern responded with a trio of goals to extend its lead to 14-9 with 14:46 left to play.
The Wolverines looked to be mounting a comeback, scoring four goals -- three of which came from Garrett to bring her total to six -- and bringing U-M within four, 13-9, with just over 15 minutes to remaining. Northwestern then scored six of the final seven goals and take the victory.
Michigan will conclude the regular season with a two-game home series against Johns Hopkins on Thursday (April 22) at 3 p.m. and Saturday (April 24) at noon inside U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
