ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team suffered a 13-12 overtime loss to No. 15 Johns Hopkins on Thursday (April 22) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines had a 12-11 lead until JHU tied it up with just 21 seconds left in regulation and scored the sudden-victory goal with 52 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to secure the win.
Senior Caitlin Muir and junior Kaitlyn Mead had three goals each for the Wolverines, while Muir added a team high two assists. Senior Molly Garrett also had a multi-goal game, scoring a pair of goals, while Erin Garvey, Caroline Davis and Nadine Stewart all scored one apiece off the bench.
Erin Daly was strong for Michigan on the draw control, with eight wins, while Maggie Kane had two wins on the draw.
Defensively, U-M had seven caused turnovers and Morgan Whitaker had three ground balls, while Mariah Sweeney had 11 saves in the cage.
The two teams exchanged goals early before the Wolverines went on a four-goal run, with Muir scoring one and assisting on two, to take an 8-3 advantage with 6:58 remaining in the first half. The Blue Jays cut the lead to four, but a second Mead goal with just 12 second left on the clock in the first half sent Michigan into the break with a 9-4 lead.
Johns Hopkins opened the second half with three straight goals, before Mead recorded her third goal of the game and freshman Shaylah Marciano scored her first career goal to extend the Wolverine lead to 11-7. However, JHU went on its second big run of the half, netting four straight and knotting the score at 11 with 8:33 remaining in regulation.
Garrett looked to give Michigan the winning goal, as she drove down the center of the lane and fired a shot with 6:53 left. The U-M defense held off the JHU attack for five minutes and 32 seconds, but the Blue Jays buried the game-tying goal to send the contest into overtime.
With 52 seconds remaining in the overtime period, Johns Hopkins netted the unassisted game-winning goal to take the first game of the series with the Wolverines.
Michigan and Johns Hopkins will conclude the two-game series and the 2021 regular season Saturday (April 24) with a noon contest at U-M Lacrosse Stadium that will be streamed live on Big Ten Network+. Following the contest with JHU, the Wolverines will honor their 10 seniors.
