STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- With a second-half hat trick from Maggie Kane and a career-best 14 saves from Arielle Weissman, the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team earned a 12-9 victory over No. 7-ranked Penn State on Friday night (March 19) at Panzer Stadium.
Kane scored two goals less than a minute into the second half to give the Wolverines the lead for good and notched her third goal later in the half, while Molly Garrett and Caitlin Muir had two goals each. Junior Erin Garvey had one goal and two assists and Claire Galvin also notched a goal and an assist.
Senior goalie Arielle Weissman was outstanding in the cage, making a career-best 14 saves, including seven in the second half. Kane played both ends of the field, winning a team-high four draw controls, also while having a team-best two caused turnovers and adding two ground balls. Garrett added three ground balls and Kaitlyn Mead had three draw-control wins and a goal.
Michigan (3-3, 3-3 Big Ten) and Penn State (2-3, 2-3 B1G) exchanged goals the entire first half as each time the Wolverines looked to take the lead, the Nittany Lions responded with a goal of their own. Penn State took its first lead of the game with 3:43 remaining and just eight seconds on the shot clock. With five seconds left in the half, the PSU looked to extend its lead to 5-3, but Weissman made a key save and the teams headed into the halftime with U-M down by one, 4-3.
Michigan went on a tear to open the second half with Kane scoring two goals less than a minute into the half before Mead and Galvin followed it up with a goal each to give the Wolverines a 7-4 advantage early in the second stanza.
Penn State scored two straight goals to come within one, 7-6, before a Muir goal put the Wolverines up, 8-6, going into a timeout. As play resumed, Penn State immediately scored to come back within one, 8-7, with just under 16 minutes to play.
U-M continued to score goals in bunches as a three-goal run, capped off with a free-position goal from Kaley Thompson, extending the Michigan advantage to 11-7 with 12:26 left in the contest. The Nittany Lions tried to close the gap less than a minute later, but a Garrett goal quickly brought the lead back to four, 12-7, with 5:37 remaining.
The Nittany Lions posted one more goal, but a key save in the final two minutes from Weissman prevented Penn State from a comeback and secured the Wolverine victory.
U-M will conclude its two-game series with Penn State on Sunday morning (March 21). The game is scheduled for 10 a.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
