STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- In a game that saw nine ties and seven lead changes, the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell just short to No. 7 Penn State, 13-12, Sunday afternoon (March 21) at Panzer Stadium.
With the Wolverines trailing 12-11, senior Molly Garrett fired her seventh goal with two seconds left to knot the game and send it into overtime, but it was Penn State (3-3, 3-3, B1G) that would find the game-winner with just 38 seconds remaining in the overtime period for the home victory.
Garrett scored a career-best seven goals on nine shots and had one assist for eight points, while freshman Annabelle Burke netted two goals in the first half for the Maize and Blue. Senior Caitlin Muir assisted on four goals and Erin Daly won a team-best four draw controls in her first start of the 2021 season.
Michigan won the draw control battle 15-12 and had seven caused turnovers with a team-best two from Erin Garvey. Garvey also added one goal and two draw control wins in her outing today and Claire Galvin scored her second goal in as many games for the Maize and Blue.
Senior Arielle Weissman recorded her second straight contest with 10 or more saves, tying a career-best 14 and having a .512 save percentage on the afternoon.
Michigan came out on a 4-0 run, including two goals from Burke, but Penn State responded, rattling off four straight goals of its own to tie the game at 4-4 with 5:45 remaining in the first half of action.
The two teams exchanged goals to close out the half as the game saw two more ties before Galvin gave U-M the 7-6 lead heading into the halftime break with her second goal in as many games.
Penn State knotted the contest at 7-7 less than two minutes into the second half of action at Panzer Stadium, but a second Muir to Garrett connection allowed the Wolverines to take the one-goal advantage for the third time of the day. The Nittany Lions answered with two straight goals to go up 9-8 with more than 21 minutes to play.
The two teams continued to exchange goal until Penn State looked to have wrapped up the win with a 12-11 lead and just five seconds remaining on the clock before Garrett drove the lane and fired her seventh goal into the back of the net to tie the game with just two seconds left in regulation.
However, Penn State hit the game-winner with 38 seconds left in overtime to earn the win.
Michigan will return to Ann Arbor on Friday, March 26, when it takes on Johns Hopkins at 5 p.m. at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
