Michigan Routs No. 18 Colorado to Sweep Home-Opening Weekend

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind five hat tricks, including a third straight from Maggie Kane, the No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team earned a home-opening weekend sweep, defeating No. 18 Colorado, 20-7, on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 23) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The win over the Buffaloes marked Michigan's first over a ranked opponent this season and was the fifth time in program history that it has scored 20 goals or more in a contest.
After scoring two goals in 40 seconds to start the game, Kane finished the day with a team-high four goals, her third hat trick in as many games, while Caitlin Muir, Molly Garrett, Erin Garvey and Kaitlyn Mead also recorded hat tricks. Muir recorded a team-best six points with three goals and three assists, while Mead earned her second straight hat trick.
Senior Lilly Grass tied Muir with a team-best three assists and freshman Mariana Lopez-Ona recorded her first career goal late in the second half. Michigan put 30 of its 40 shots on cage, while converting on three free positions.
Junior goalie Arielle Weissman made a career-best nine saves with a few key saves on the Colorado free position attempts.
Kane also led U-M on the draw with five wins, while Garvey tied a career-best four draw control wins, and Mead added three.
Kane scored a pair of goals in less than one minute, winning the first two draws and capitalizing to put Michigan up, 2-0. Garrett scored two free-position attempts to add to the Michigan tally in the first five minutes to extend the Wolverine lead to 4-1.
U-M continued to build on its lead when Kane recorded her third straight hat trick of the season before Muir brought the Michigan advantage to 5-1. Colorado closed the gap to 5-3 following two straight markers, but once again Michigan answered with two of its own to grab a four-goal advantage, 7-3.
The Wolverines closed out the first half on a 5-0 run, taking a comfortable 13-4 lead into the locker room at halftime. Kane scored four goals in the first half, while Muir, Mead, Garrett and Garvey all scored twice. Michigan dominated in ground balls, 13-6, in the first haf.
U-M opened the second half the same as it finished the first with a 5-0 run, taking an 18-4 lead at the 17:46 mark and forcing a running clock for the rest of the game.
Colorado scored three unanswered goals with just over 13 minutes remaining, but it was unable to overcome the deficit as Michigan tacked on two final goals to earn the victory.
Michigan will return to action Saturday (Feb. 29) when it takes on Albany at U-M Lacrosse Stadium at noon. The game will be the first of a doubleheader with the men's team, which will take on St. John's at 3 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
