
Michigan Bounces Back with Offensive Outburst, Win Over UConn

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan baseball team received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the No. 9-ranked Wolverines put 14 runs on the board and defeat UConn, 14-2, Saturday (Feb. 22) in the middle game of a three-game set at the New York Mets Spring Training Complex.
Redshirt freshman Steven Hajjar (2-0) picked up the win for Michigan (4-2), tossing five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and striking out three. Freshman Jacob Denner also made an impact on the mound, throwing four scoreless innings to earn his first collegiate save.
At the plate, the Wolverines were led by senior Dominic Clementi, who went 3-for-4 on the day with two doubles and three RBI. Freshman Ted Burton had a standout day at the plate as well, smacking his first career home run and driving in three. Redshirt sophomore Danny Zimmerman also chipped in for Michigan, putting together two hits in two trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and two RBI.
Connecticut got on the board first with a single run in the top of the frame, but the Wolverines struck back with a vengeance. Michigan's offense clicked from the start, putting up four runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Clementi.
After the Huskies cut the score to 4-2, the Maize and Blue added to its lead with a pair of runs in the in the third, highlighted by an RBI double from Clementi, which brought the Wolverines lead to 6-2.
The Wolverines' offense then added seven runs in the home half of the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Burton's three-run dinger highlighted a frame that included four hits, three walks, and two UConn errors.
Junior Jordan Nwogu crossed home plate with a lone run in the next inning, bringing the Michigan advantage to 14-2. Neither team scored the rest of the way ans U-M cruised to victory.
Clementi's three hits led the way for Michigan, while Nwogu, Zimmerman and sophomore Riley Bertram each added a pair of knocks. Every starter reached base at least once during the game, while freshman Joey Velazquez registered his first career hit.
The Wolverines and Huskies will battle for the series Sunday (Feb. 23) in a morning showdown at the New York Mets Spring Training Complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Field 5.
