COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan baseball team maintained constant offensive pressure as the Wolverines cruised past Maryland on Saturday (May 4) by a score of 10-4 at Bob Smith Stadium.
Michigan (33-11, 13-3 B1G) broke up a scoreless game in the third inning with a two-out rally. Brewer walked and then stole second base. Jimmy Kerr lined the very next pitch into right field for an RBI.
Randy Bednar tied the game in the bottom of the frame when he lined a 3-1 fastball down the left-field line for his eighth homer of the year.
Maryland (23-24, 8-9 B1G) starter Zach Thompson did his best to keep the conference's top hitting team at bay by working exceptionally fast. His luck ran out in the fifth inning when, with two outs, he walked four batters, hit another and surrendered three of Michigan's six stolen bases to that point. The result was a 3-1 Michigan lead without the benefit of a hit as the Terps were forced to the bullpen early for a second straight game. Sean Fisher entered the game but immediately fell behind Joe Donovan 2-0, forcing him to serve up a fastball, which Michigan's catcher lined into left for a two-run single and a 5-1 lead. Following another walk the inning came to an end when Jordan Nwogu just missed a grand slam, flying out to the center-field wall.
Michigan added three more runs in the sixth inning on RBI singles from Miles Lewis and Donovan and a sacrifice fly from Jack Blomgren for a commanding 8-1 lead.
Max Costes connected on a home run to lead-off the bottom of the sixth inning but Michigan's Tommy Henry (8-3) answered with his sixth and seventh strikeouts of the day has he rolled through the batting order. A leadoff double in the seventh played a factor in chasing Henry from the game and the Terps pushed their third run across against reliever Angelo Smith.
Jesse Franklin connected on a long two-run homer down the right-field line in the ninth inning to close out the scoring for Michigan. Benjamin Cowles connected on the Terps' third homer of the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Donovan and Kerr each had two hits to lead the Wolverines.
Michigan and Maryland will complete their their three-game series on Sunday (May 5) at 2 p.m. from Bob Smith Stadium. Game time was moved back an hour due to potential inclement weather.
