The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team (2-2) will head to Maryland for its 2018 spring trip and a pair of matchups against top-15 opponents. The Wolverines will take on No. 10 Navy on Sunday (Feb. 25) at 1 p.m. at Rip Miller Turf in Annapolis, Maryland, before heading north to face No. 11 Towson on Wednesday (Feb. 28) at 4 p.m. inside Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Maryland.
WOLVERINE BITES
• Michigan played its first two home games at the new U-M Lacrosse Stadium last weekend, emerging 2-0 with dominating wins over Butler (12-2) and Canisius (14-3).
• With her six goals in two games last weekend, junior Adriana Pendino moved into ninth all-time at Michigan for career goals with 20. Twelve of those 20 goals have come in four games this season, and she leads the Wolverines in that category. She scored a career-high five goals against Butler (Feb. 16), tying her for second all-time at U-M for goals in a game.
• Michigan is 23-for-35 (66 percent) on free-position shots this season. The Wolverines are close to surpassing last year's team total of 27 free-position goals and are approaching the program record for most FPGs in a season of 37, which was set by the 2015 team. Eleven different players have tallied a FPG this season, led by a 7-for-9 mark from Pendino. Pendino matched the program record for FPGs in a game with three against Colorado (Feb. 9) and Butler (Feb. 16), while sophomore midfielder Chandler Kirby also hit the mark against Canisius (Feb. 18).
• Michigan has won 48 total draw controls this season, compared to 41 from its opponents. Sophomore Molly Garrett and freshman Maggie Kane have combined to win 35 of 48 draw controls (73 percent), recording 19 and 16, respectively, this season. Garrett needs just five more to jump into the all-time top 10 for draw controls in a season at U-M, while her 37 career draw controls rank ninth in program history.
• After missing the first three games with injury, freshman attacker Caitlin Muir made her career debut in maize and blue against Canisius (Feb. 18) and scored one goal. Muir is poised to be a key member of Michigan's attack this season.
• Junior goalie Alli Kothari has earned the start in all four games this season, while classmate Mira Shane has also seen time off the bench in three of four games. Kothari shut out Butler in the first half of the 12-2 win over the Bulldogs, saving all seven shots on goal. The two goals allowed against Butler rank third all-time at Michigan for fewest goals allowed in a game.
• Pendino is tied for fifth in the Big Ten with three goals per game, while junior Maddie Klee is tied for fifth in assists per game, averaging 1.0 per outing. Garrett and Kane are fourth and sixth, respectively, in the conference in draw controls, averaging 4.8 and 4.0 per game.
• The Wolverines will face their second and third ranked opponents of the season with No. 10 Navy and No. 11 Towson. U-M fell to No. 17 Colorado, 20-10, in the 2018 season opener.
Scouting Navy
Navy will play its third game of the season against Michigan on Sunday (Feb. 25) under the direction of Hall of Fame head coach Cindy Timchal. The decorated head coach is the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division I history with 491 victories heading into the 2018 season. In 2017, Timchal and the Navy lacrosse team made history, as it became the first service academy team from a women's sport to advance to the NCAA Final Four. The Midshipmen are 2-0 on the year after opening up their season with a 9-7 win against Ohio State and a 21-10 win against Columbia. A total of seven different players have scored the 30 goals thus far. Sisters Julia and Jenna Collins both recorded four goals against Columbia and tallied 24 of Navy's 25 draw controls in the game. The 2017 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, sophomore Kelly Larkin, joined the Collins twins with four goals on the day. The Midshipmen were the unanimous prediction to finish atop the Patriot League when preseason honors were announced.
Series vs. Navy
The Wolverines and the Midshipmen have met only once in program history, with Navy taking the 12-9 win in 2014.
Scouting Towson
Towson will play its third game of the season against Michigan next Wednesday (Feb. 28) under eighth-year head coach Sonia LaMonica. The Tigers are 2-0 this season after opening up with a 14-13 upset of No. 4 Penn State and a 21-13 win over Georgetown. Senior midfielder Emily Gillingham finished with a game-high eight points on seven goals and one assist against the Hoyas, giving her nine goals on the season. The Tigers had six players named to the preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association team, including seniors Gillingham, Kaitlyn Montalbano and Tianna Wallpher; juniors Nathlaie Sulmonte and Carly Tellekamp; and sophomore Olivia Conti. Conti became the first freshman in the history of the CAA to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors after posting a CAA single-season-record 49 caused turnovers last season. Sulmonte is the team's leading returner in assists (22) and points (67), while Tellekamp led all returners in goals with 54.
Series vs. Towson
Michigan and Towson will go head to head for the first time in program history.
