ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team, behind three second-half goals that featured a brace from junior Daniel Mukuna and a superior finish from sophomore Jack Hallahan from near midfield, knocked off Cleveland State, 3-1, Friday night (Sept. 1) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Michigan (2-0-1) outshot the Vikings (0-2-0), 5-1, in the opening half and bossed the possession but was unable to find a breakthrough.
All of that changed in the second stanza, as Hallahan, who has been U-M's main offensive threat this season, collected the ball 15 yards from the midfield line and took on several Cleveland State defenders near the center line. The Irishman saw Viking goalkeeper Sebastian Kalk off his line and tried his luck as he chipped the goalkeeper with an inch-perfect effort from 50 yards out to give U-M the 1-0 lead.
Just over six minutes later, in the 55th minute, Mukuna made it 2-0. Senior midfielder Tristan Jacob sent a service from the left flank into the area. The right-footed ball found Mukuna's head at the top of the six-yard box, and he finished with pace to double the lead.
Mukuka found joy once again at the 58:02 mark of the half, as junior Robbie Mertz and Hallahan connected on the right flank. Hallahan sent in a low service that was handled by Mukuna, who did the deed once again to stretch the advantage to 3-0.
The Vikings added their lone goal in the 69th minute as Brent Nanchoff beat U-M goalkeeper Andrew Verdi, who made a pair of saves on the night.
