
U-M to Play Host to Cleveland State, Dartmouth

In the midst of a five-match homestand to kick off the 2017 season, the University of Michigan men's soccer team (1-0-1) hosts Cleveland State on Friday (Sept. 1) at 7 p.m., and Dartmouth on Monday, (Sept. 4) at 1 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
WOLVERINE BITES
• Sophomore Jack Hallahan tied the program record for most shots in a match (11) in Michigan's 1-1 draw against Valparaiso on Monday (Aug. 28). He also scored the team's lone goal of the match, evening the score in the 81st minute.
• The Wolverines fired 26 shots against Valparaiso, the ninth-most in a game in program history. Overall, they have outshot opponents by a 34-18 margin in two matches, including a 9-5 margin in shots on goal.
• Nine players made their University of Michigan debuts on opening weekend: junior transfer Daniel Mukuna; sophomores Andrew Verdi, Abdou Samake, and Lucas Rosendall;and freshmen Mohammed Zakyi, Umar Farouk Osman, Jackson Ragen, Marc Ybarra and Austin Swiech. There are 10 true freshmen on this year's roster, the most in program history.
• Three of those newcomers have been involved in both of the team's goals thus far: Mohammed Zakyi (goal vs. William & Mary), Umar Farouk Osman and sophomore Lucas Rosendall (assists vs. Valparaiso).
• Senior tri-captain Billy Stevens has now started 55 matches in his career, while fellow tri-captain Robbie Mertz has started 16 matches. In all, the 71 combined starts between the pair were more than the other nine starters combined in the team sheet used against Valparaiso (52 starts).
• Sophomore Andrew Verdi has been the man in goal thus far after winning the preseason competition. He has played in all 200 minutes of match action, making four saves to go along with a clean sheet against William & Mary.
OPPONENT PREVIEWS
Cleveland State -- The Vikings, picked fifth in the preseason Horizon League Poll, return 14 letterwinners from last year's squad while welcoming 10 newcomers to the mix under first-year head coach Kirk Harwat. The side is led by midfielder Alec Nagucki, an All-Horizon League performer a year ago. Cleveland State opened the season on Tuesday (Aug. 29) with a 2-0 loss to Bowling Green.
The Wolverines are 2-1 all-time against Cleveland State. The two teams last met in 2012, with the Vikings claiming a 3-0 victory in Ann Arbor.
Dartmouth -- Dartmouth, the three-time defending champion of the Ivy League, boast senior midfielder Matt Danilack, who led the team last season in goals (four) and assists (five). Defender Wyatt Omsberg, a preseason All-American and member of the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch list, leads the back line. He was Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year a season ago. Chad Riley is in his third season as the head coach for the Big Green.
Monday's matchup will be the first meeting between the two schools.
