ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team defeated the Dartmouth Big Green, 1-0, behind a marker from junior forward Francis Atuahene in the 82nd minute on Monday (Sept. 4) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines (3-0-1) earned a golden chance in the seventh minute as freshman Umar Farouk Osman drew a foul inside the 18-yard box for a Wolverine penalty kick. The chance was taken by junior Ivo Cerda, but was turned away by Dartmouth (0-2-0) goalkeeper Chris Palacios as U-M earned early momentum in the matchup.
At the half, U-M owned a 5-2 shot advantage and a 3-1 margin in shots on goal. Outside of a flurry from the Big Green in the 63rd and 64th minutes of play, U-M controlled the tempo of the match. Sophomore Jack Hallahan had five shots in the second stanza alone, with a try on goal serving as U-M's most dangerous chance to date in the 74th minute as he hit a strike from the top right of the box that squeaked just wide right of goal.
Hallahan had a major hand in Atuahene's marker in the 82nd minute as he and freshman Marc Ybarra linked up. Ybarra sent a ball from the center of the pitch to Hallahan on the wing, and the ensuing service connected with Atuahene at the top of the box. With a lovely piece of skill, Atuahene beat his defender and bent a ball from 15-yards out left side just inside the right post. The goal served as the eventual winner, marking the sixth of Atuahene's U-M career.
Andrew Verdi made three saves in goal, and was aided by the back four of sophomore Abdou Samake, juniors Daniel Mukuna and Marcello Borges, and senior Billy Stevens in holding the reigning Ivy League champions to only six shots on the afternoon.
