BERKELEY, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team led wire to wire to earn its first victory of the season, defeating California, 14-4, on Friday (March 3) inside California Memorial Stadium.
On the offensive end, the Wolverines were led by hat tricks from seniors Jess Angerman, Kim Coughlan and Anna Schueler. The defensive unit that allowed just four goals was highlighted by sophomore Madison Richardson, who had three caused turnovers and four ground balls, and defender senior Emily Braun, who recorded three caused turnovers, three ground balls and four draw controls. Sophomore/freshman Alli Kothari earned the start in goal and made six saves in 51 minutes of action before sophomore Mira Shane entered the game and made two saves on two shots faced.
The Wolverines won the first two draws of the game, leading to a free-position goal from Schueler and an unassisted tally from Coughlan by the 27:42 mark. Sophie duPhily then scored from the floating hash on an open net after California's goalie was called for a foul, and senior Kelly Schlansker added a free-position goal to give Michigan a 4-0 edge with 16:51 left in the half.
Both teams then went quiet for the next 13 minutes until the Bears got their first tally of the day at the 3:34 mark. The Wolverines ended the half on a 3-0 run with Schueler and Coughlan netting their second goals of the night and senior Lauren Oberlander scoring on a free-position attempt. Michigan held a 7-1 advantage at the break after outshooting the Golden Bears 18-3.
With just 1:31 off the clock in the second half, Cal converted its second free-position goal to make it 7-2. Michigan answered as senior Allie Breitfeller found senior Natalie Carti in transition for the quick score, and then Angerman and Schueler scored unassisted goals to push U-M's lead to eight, 10-2, with 19:54 remaining.
After Cal registered its third goal, Schueler fed Angerman, who rifled a hard shot past the Bears' goalie. Coughlan completed her hat trick at 13:35, and Angerman followed suit at 9:22. Two Wolverine freshmen connected to tally the Wolverines' final goal of the night, as Chandler Kirby fed Molly Garrett in the middle of the eight-meter arc for the quick score.
Overall, Michigan outshot California, 33-18, including a lopsided 18-3 margin in the first half. Michigan's 10-goal victory is tied for sixth in program history for largest margin of victory. The Maize and Blue defense held California to just four goals, tied for third in the U-M record book for fewest goals allowed.
