COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Kim Coughlan scored the game-winning goal in the sudden-victory overtime period to help the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team record the first Big Ten Conference win in program history, 12-11, on Saturday (March 18) inside Ohio Stadium.
Lauren Oberlander led the Wolverines with four goals, including a first-half hat trick to match her career high, while Coughlan finished with her fourth hat trick of the season with three goals. Jess Angerman assisted on four goals for the second straight game. With her free free-position goal in the second half, Anna Schueler became the third player in program history to score 100 career goals, joining Coughlan and Angerman, who reached the milestone in the last two games, respectively.
With Michigan trailing Ohio State, 6-4, at halftime, the Buckeyes came out of the locker room and took a quick 7-4 lead just over a minute into the second half. Michigan regrouped and Oberlander scored her fourth goal of the day on an assist from Angerman to spark a 5-0 Michigan run.
Schueler won the next draw, and less than three minutes later, Angerman recorded her third assist of the afternoon, as she found Allie Breitfeller cutting around the crease for the low-angle goal at 21:14. Schueler won the draw once again, which led to an unassisted goal from Tess Korten 32 seconds later to tie the game, 7-7, with 20:42 left to play. The draw continued to be a key factor for U-M, as Coughlan grabbed another draw control following Korten's goal. With 14:10 left in the game, Kelly Schlansker fed Natalie Carti cutting through the eight-meter arc for the quick goal. Schueler capped the 5-0 run, as she fired a laser under the cross bar on a free-position attempt to give the Maize and Blue a 9-7 lead.

OSU cut its deficit to one, 9-8, with 8:55 to go, but Coughlan scored the game's next two goals to give U-M its largest lead of the day, 11-8, with 4:57 remaining. Down the stretch, Ohio State scored three unanswered goals to tie the game, 11-11, including its last one with 43 seconds remaining in regulation, sending the game to a sudden-victory overtime.
Madeline Dion came up with one of her two key draw controls on the day to start the overtime period and give the Wolverines possession. Michigan settled into its offense and got the ball into the stick of Coughlan, who drove left, dodged a defender and fired home the most monumental game-winning goal of her career.
Early in the first half, the Wolverines' defensive ride helped give them several offensive chances, as they caused two OSU turnovers in the midfield within a one-minute span. U-M had 11 shots in the first 15 minutes, but was able to find the back of the net just once. Coughlan fed Oberlander in the middle of the eight-meter arc for the quick turn and score at the 19:43 mark to tie the game, 1-1.
The Buckeyes then went on a 4-0 run to take a 5-1 lead with 7:37 left in the first half and force Michigan to call timeout. Out of the timeout, Oberlander drew two shooting-space calls in three minutes and converted both free-position goals to pull the Wolverines back within two, 5-3, at the 4:44 mark.
Following a Buckeye free-position goal with 3:43 remaining in the first stanza, Mira Shane replaced Alli Kothari in cage. With a minute and a half to go, Angerman was awarded a free-position attempt, and off the whistle she quickly found Carti on the crease for the score to make it a 6-4 game at intermission.
Shane, who played the final 39 minutes of the game, made seven saves en route to her second straight win.
Michigan won the draw for the eighth time this season, 13-12, led by four draw controls from Schueler and Emily Braun, and three from Coughlan. Overall, the Wolverines outshot the Buckeyes, 34-24, including 21-10 in the first half.
With their first Big Ten win under their belt, the Wolverines will return to Ann Arbor to host Northwestern in their conference home opener on Thursday, March 23, at 4:30 p.m. inside Michigan Stadium. The game will be televised on BTN and will also be available online on BTN2Go.
