ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team was tied at halftime with No. 14 Northwestern and was within one goal with less than seven minutes remaining but ultimately dropped a 10-8 decision to the Wildcats on Thursday (March 23) inside Michigan Stadium.
On the offensive end, Tess Korten led the Wolverines in scoring with her 13th career hat trick. In addition to scoring one goal, Anna Schueler recorded her 200th career draw control, and finished with 201, after pulling in a team-high four draw controls. Mira Shane tied a career-high nine saves in goal. Her last time recording nine saves was in U-M's 2016 season matchup with Northwestern.
The Wildcats began the game with the first two goals of the day. It was a low-scoring affair for both sides in the first half, as Northwestern's first goal came at 28:55, but its second did not come until the 17:20 mark. The Wolverines responded with a 2-0 run of their own with a free position goal from Korten and a goal from Jess Angerman, who curled around the crease from behind and scored unassisted at 13:23.
Both teams went scoreless for almost seven minutes, before Northwestern scored a man-up goal to retake the lead, 3-2, with 6:41 remaining in the opening half. U-M answered right back, as Kelly Schlansker drove up the middle and scored on a hard bounce shot to tie the game, making it 3-3 at half.
Northwestern began the second half with back-to-back goals to put the Wildcats up 5-3 at 23:33. Madeline Dion ended the run with an assist from Natalie Carti, and the Wolverines were back within one, 5-4. Following Northwestern's next goal at the 16:51 mark, Schueler recorded her 200th career draw control, which eventually led to Korten's second goal of the game, on the give-and-go assist from Schueler.
The Wildcats then went on a 3-1 run, with U-M's goal during that stretch coming from Sophie duPhily. The Wolverines responded with back-to-back goals within less than a minute -- Korten's third goal and Schueler's first -- to bring Michigan within one, 9-8, at the 6:48 mark. Northwestern scored one more with 5:53 left to bring its lead back to two, 10-8.
Shane made a crucial save on a Northwestern free-position shot with four-and-a-half minutes left, and Michigan got off two shots in the final four minutes but could not find the equalizing goals.
Michigan's defense held Northwestern's leading scorer Christina Esposito, who was averaging three goals per game, to just one goal and one assist. Dion and fellow defender Becca Marchant led the Maize and Blue with two caused turnovers each.
