ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team edged Winthrop, 10-9, to earn its fourth win of the season on Sunday (March 26) in front of a season attendance record 478 fans at Michigan Stadium.
Today's Youth Lacrosse Day at Michigan Stadium brought local youth teams from Southeast Michigan to participate in games prior to the game and at halftime. The event helped the Wolverines set a season attendance record of 478.
Jess Angerman got Michigan on the board first at 28:31 and followed that up with another goal with 23:10 left in the first half to give the Wolverines an early 2-0 lead. Winthrop's Nicole Beatson scored the Eagles' first of the day on a free-position shot at 21:45.
Both teams then went quiet for the next eight minutes until the Maize and Blue went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-2 lead with three minutes to go in the opening half. Bianca Brueckner jumpstarted the run with an unassisted goal, and then Natalie Carti created the next two goals during that run, assisting Anna Schueler and Lauren Oberlander on back-to-back goals, giving Carti a career-high two assists. Chandler Kirby then netted her second goal of the season. Adriana Pendino generated Michigan's next goal, causing a turnover on the ride. Pendino knocked down a Winthrop pass, and Brueckner picked up the ground ball and found Pendino in transition for the quick score.
Winthrop ended the first half with two goals in the final two-and-a-half minutes to make it 7-3 at intermission.
The Eagles picked up where they left off, scoring the first four goals of the second half to complete a 6-0 run and tie the game, 7-7, with 24:44 left. Kim Coughlan ended the run with an unassisted goal a little more than a minute later, and the two teams traded goals over the next 20 minutes.
Beatson tied the game once again a minute later. Schuler netted her second goal of the game at the 20:05 mark, firing a free-position shot under the crossbar. With 7:04 remaining in the game, Winthrop tied the game, 9-9. Madeline Dion netted the game-winning goal with 3:05 on the clock, as she received a pass from Carti at the top and drove right and bounced a shot past Winthrop goalie Chloe Wormsley.
U-M goalie Mira Shane earned her third win of the season, making three saves in 34 minutes, while Alli Kothari came off the bench to make seven saves in 26 minutes in the second half. Emily Braun led the Michigan defense with four caused turnovers.
