COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Despite a program-record 10 draw controls from senior midfielder Anna Schueler, the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team was overwhelmed by No. 1 Maryland, falling to the Terrapins, 20-7, on Saturday (April 1) at UMD's Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
Schueler's record-setting 10 draw controls helped the Wolverines win the draw control battle for the ninth time this season, 18-11. Prior to today's game, Maryland was second in the Big Ten, averaging 14.7 draw controls per game.
On the offensive end, senior attacker Kim Coughlan led Michigan with her team-leading fifth hat trick of the season, while Kelly Schlansker posted one goal and one assist. Sophomore goalie Mira Shane finished the game with eight saves, including five in the first half, putting her just one shy of her career best.
Maryland began the game with three straight goals, but following a Michigan timeout, the Wolverines came out and brought the game within one, 3-2, at the 20:43 mark. Schueler got things going with a laser free-position goal just under the crossbar, and then senior attacker Jess Angerman followed with a left-handed drive and bounce shot that got past UMD goalie Megan Taylor.
The Terps then rattled off 10 straight goals in roughly 18 minutes to take a 13-2 lead into the halftime break.
Out of the locker room, Coughlan netted her first of the day a little more than two minutes into play to bring an end to Maryland's run. The Terrapins then made it 14-3, but Coughlan answered right back as Bianca Brueckner found her cutting around the crease for the quick score at 23:32 to make it 14-4 Maryland.
With Maryland leading 17-4, senior attacker Tess Korten drove from the right elbow, roll-dodged her defender and scored on a bounce shot to beat Emily Kift, who came in to replace Taylor in goal.
Schlansker helped Michigan put two more on the board, contributing to its next two goals. With Coughlan cutting left to right through the eight-meter arc, Schlansker found her on the run to help complete Coughlan's hat trick, and then Schlansker drove left from outside the 12-meter arc and beat Maryland goalie Emma Moss off the bounce shot. The Terps tallied the final goal of the day with 1:05 on the clock to produce the final score of 20-7.
Overall, 23 different Wolverines saw time in today's game, with several of U-M's young players gaining valuable experience against a top-ranked opponent.
