MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The University of Michigan baseball team was defeated 13-1 by Minnesota on Friday night (May 8) in their series opener at Siebert Field.
Michigan (30-18, 15-10 Big Ten) fell behind 5-0 early, but tried to make it a game in the third inning. Drew Culbertson hit a solo home run with one out before two walks put runners on, but the Wolverines did not plate another run in the frame.
Minnesota (30-18, 11-14 Big Ten) scored four runs on two hits in the first inning and added another run in the third. The Golden Gophers extended their lead with seven runs on eight hits across the third and fourth. Justin Brown and Keegan O'Hearn combined for a scoreless fifth, holding Minnesota scoreless in an inning for the first and only time.
The Wolverines had chances to score in the fifth and sixth innings but were unable to plate any runs. In the fifth, Dane Morrow singled to open the inning and Cooper Mullens drew a one-out walk, but a double play ended the frame. In the sixth, Michigan loaded the bases, but a strikeout left the runners on.
The Golden Gophers added another run in the sixth, but O'Hearn struck out the final batter with the bases loaded to prevent any further damage. In the top of the seventh, Michigan went down in order, ending the game.
The Wolverines will continue their series against Minnesota at 2 p.m. on Saturday (May 9) at Siebert Field. The contest will be streamed live on B1G+.
