MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The University of Michigan baseball team used an early offensive surge to defeat Minnesota, 8-5, on Sunday afternoon (May 10) at Siebert Field and secure the weekend series victory.
After slow offensive starts in the first two games of the series, Michigan (32-18, 17-10 Big Ten) jumped out to an early lead, scoring six runs in the first three innings. Singles from Brayden Jefferis, Matthew Ossenfort and Brenden Stressler loaded the bases in the second before a two-base dropped fly ball put Michigan on the board as Dane Morrow reached safely. Elie Kligman followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Stressler.
In the third inning, Colby Turner led off with a home run and Evan Haeger doubled before scoring on a single from Ossenfort. U-M's sixth run came after a double from Stressler moved Ossenfort to third before Morrow added a sacrifice fly.
Minnesota (30-20, 11-16 Big Ten) was quieted by Michael Quedens (3-0), who allowed just one run on three hits over his first five innings of work. The sophomore allowed a run in the third on a sacrifice fly before pitching a 1-2-3 fourth inning.
The Wolverines added to their lead in the fifth as Stressler scored on a double from Morrow. Quedens allowed two baserunners in the inning but stranded both after forcing a flyout to end the frame. Haeger hit a solo home run in the sixth to extend Michigan's lead to 8-1 before the Golden Gophers began to rally.
Minnesota used solo home runs in the sixth and seventh innings off Quedens to cut the deficit to 8-3, ending the sophomore's career-long outing. The Golden Gophers added two more runs in the seventh on an RBI groundout and a home run off the right-field foul pole to trim the lead to three, but Grant Bradley got a groundout and strikeout to end the inning.
In the eighth, Minnesota had runners on first and second with one out before Cade Montgomery took over on the mound and forced two flyouts to strand runners on the corners. Montgomery returned in the ninth and retired the Golden Gophers in order, ending the game with a strikeout.
Quedens improved to 3-0, allowing four runs on six hits with three strikeouts while more than doubling his previous career high in innings pitched of 2.2. Montgomery earned the save for the second consecutive day, pitching the final 1.2 innings without allowing a run.
At the plate, the Wolverines were paced by three-hit performances from Ossenfort and Jefferis. Stressler added two hits and scored twice, while Haeger scored two runs on a pair of hits, including a home run. Morrow drove in a team-high three runs.
The Wolverines will return to action on Tuesday (May 12) at 4 p.m. against Kent State at Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium. The contest will stream on ESPN+.
