ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 10-6 victory over No. 25 Ohio State in a midweek Big Ten Conference game Thursday (April 2) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (10-2, 4-0 Big Ten) improved to 4-0 in Big Ten play for the first time in program history with their win over the Buckeyes (7-5, 2-3 Big Ten).
The Michigan defense had seven caused turnovers, with Jordyn Harrison causing four and having two ground balls, while Elizabeth Johnson made 11 stops in the cage for her fourth double-digit save effort of the season.
Graduate student Ava Class and junior Emma Bradbury paced the Michigan offense with five points each -- Bradbury netted a hat trick and had two assists, while Class had three assists and two goals, and Katharine Merrifield scored twice. Sophomore Emma Burke led the draw with eight wins, and Grace Callahan had three draw-control wins on the evening.
Calli Norris put Michigan on the scoreboard early as she capitalized on the first free position of the game, giving U-M a 1-0 lead over the Buckeyes. OSU knotted the score at 1-1 in the final five minutes of the first quarter.
Ohio State scored less than 30 seconds into the second stanza to take a 2-1 lead, but Michigan responded quickly when Bradbury fed Merrifield on a cut and followed it up with a driving goal of her own to put the Wolverines up 3-2 with 10:37 left to play in the first half. The defensive battle stymied both offenses, with neither team able to find another goal in the final 10 minutes as Michigan took its 3-2 lead into the halftime break.
The Buckeyes broke the scoring drought with 6:39 left in the third quarter before U-M responded with back-to-back goals from Bradbury and Class to go up 5-3. OSU came within one before the end of the third quarter as the two teams went into the final quarter in a one-goal battle, with U-M ahead 5-4.
The Wolverines opened a scoring frenzy in the fourth quarter, scoring three straight goals to double up the Buckeyes 8-4 with 11:56 remaining in the game. Ohio State put an end to the run with a goal of its own; however, three minutes later, Class added her second of the night to put U-M up 9-5 with just over six minutes remaining in the contest.
OSU came within three in the final three minutes and tried to start a run, but it was cut short when Michigan scored another goal in the final minutes to lock up the win.
U-M will hit the road as it travels to Rutgers for a Thursday (April 9) contest at SHI Stadium. The contest is set to start at 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on B1G+.
