ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind a complete game from David Lally Jr., the University of Michigan baseball team used a pair of runs in the fourth inning to defeat Northwestern, 2-1, on Sunday (April 19) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, earning the series sweep.
Lally powered the Wolverines, tossing his first career nine-inning complete game, setting career highs in innings pitched and pitches and matching his strikeout high with six. The junior threw six 1-2-3 innings and allowed just one unearned run on one hit while walking three batters.
After three innings of scoreless baseball, Michigan (24-15, 10-8 Big Ten) brought eight batters to the plate in the fourth, scoring two runs. A one-out single from Colby Turner gave the Wolverines a spark, and after a stolen base and a single from Brayden Jefferis, U-M had runners on the corners with one out. Cade Ladehoff brought Turner home on a fielder's-choice bunt, with the initial out call overturned on replay to make it 1-0. Brenden Stressler followed with a single to score Jefferis, and although U-M loaded the bases, a strikeout and fielder's choice ended the rally.
After walking the leadoff batter to open the game, Lally retired nine straight before issuing another leadoff walk in the fourth. The Wolverine right-hander held a no-hitter through five innings until Northwestern (14-21-1, 5-13 Big Ten) recorded its first hit on a two-out single. The Wildcats scored on a passed ball in the next at-bat, cutting the Michigan lead to one after five innings.
Lally went 1-2-3 in the next inning, and the Wolverines had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth with two outs but were unable to add to their lead, keeping the score at 2-1. Lally continued his dominance with three-up, three-down innings in both the seventh and eighth. He returned for the ninth and snagged a line drive on the first pitch for the opening out before retiring the next two batters to seal the win and series sweep.
Offensively, Turner and Jefferis each went 2-for-4 with a run, as Turner extended his hitting streak to 19 games.
The Wolverines will head on the road to face Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday (April 21) at 3 p.m. at McKie Field at Hayden Park. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
