SURPRISE, Ariz. -- In the Surprise College Baseball Series, the University of Michigan baseball team edged Stanford, 7-6, on Saturday night (Feb. 14) at Surprise Stadium. Michigan (2-0) was paced by a strong outing from Cade Montgomery, who struck out five over 6.1 innings, while allowing just one unearned run on five hits. Offensively, the Wolverines received key contributions from Cade Ladehoff and Brayden Jefferis, helping secure the one-run victory.
Leading off a jam-packed ninth inning, Ladehoff drew a walk, and Josh Campbell pinch-ran, scoring on a Brenden Stressler double. After two strikeouts, Miller singled to bring home Stressler, pushing the U-M lead to 7-2, heading into the bottom of the frame.
However, Stanford (1-1) responded with a leadoff walk and a single before a flyout, then scored two on a triple to cut the lead to three. Gavin DeVooght replaced Preston Barr on the mound, and an error allowed another Stanford run. The Cardinal loaded the bases, but Stressler threw out a runner at home on Noah Miller's tag to record the second out. Stanford would plate one more run before DeVooght settled in and ended the game with a strikeout.
Ladehoff reached base four times, including a triple, and tallied two runs and two RBIs. Jefferies was the only Wolverine with multiple hits, and added a run and a walk.
Stanford sent the Wolverines down in order to start the game, but Montgomery matched it with a 1-2-3 inning of his own, including his first Michigan strikeout to end the inning. Both programs sent the minimum three batters to the plate in the second, with Michigan using a 1-6-3 double play to retire the Cardinal.
The Wolverines opened the scoring in the third with Greg Pace Jr. drawing a one-out walk before a two-out walk from Jefferis. Ladehoff came to the plate and hit a ball to the centerfield wall, which allowed both runners to score as he reached third base. A flyout ended the inning and Montgomery pitched another 1-2-3 frame in the bottom of the third.
Michigan added a run in the fourth after Colby Turner singled. With two outs, Evan Haeger recorded his first hit of the night, scoring Turner and giving the Wolverines a 3–0 lead. Haeger then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, while Pace drew his second walk and moved to second on a wild pitch before a strikeout ended the inning. Montgomery remained dominant, retiring the side in order with three groundouts.
Ladehoff and Stressler drew back-to-back walks with one out in the fifth, and with two outs Matthew Ossenfort delivered a single to center, which scored Ladehoff. Noah Miller drew a walk to load the bases, but a flyout ended the frame. Stanford singled to open the frame with the runner coming around to score after a two-out error and a single. After a three-batter top of the sixth inning for Michigan, Montgomery returned to the mound and allowed two singles, but recovered with his fifth strikeout of the day to strand the runners on the corners.
In the seventh, Ladehoff was hit by a pitch to open the frame and Stressler drew a walk for two runners on and no outs. After a strikeout, Carson Luna pinch-hit and on the first pitch shot a line drive past the shortstop for his first collegiate hit to score Ladehoff. In the bottom of the seventh, Montgomery forced a groundout before issuing a walk to finish his night. Max Debiec retired the next two batters he faced with strikeouts to end the seventh.
The Wolverines recorded two singles in the eighth, but both runners were thrown out attempting to steal second. Debiec returned to the mound and allowed a leadoff double before recording a groundout and a strikeout. The Cardinal plated a run on a wild pitch to trim Michigan's lead to 5-2, but a flyout ended the inning.
Michigan will return to action on Sunday (Feb. 15) against No. 24-ranked Arizona for the third day of the College Baseball Series. The 4 p.m. MT contest is slated to air on FloCollege. Â
