COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team dropped a narrow 1-0 decision in a low-scoring slate at No. 10 Maryland on Friday evening (Sept. 26) at the Terrapins' Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
The game was largely played outside the circles as the teams combined for just 10 total shots. Maryland (6-2, 2-0 Big Ten) outshot the Wolverines 7-3 and outcornered them 6-2 -- both season lows for Michigan (5-3, 1-1 Big Ten). Two of the Terps' corners came in the final 20 seconds of the fourth quarter, skewing the final margin, without a Michigan goalkeeper and did not produce a shot.
Maryland scored the game's lone goal at the 39:50 mark midway through the third quarter. After corralling an errant pass in the midfield, the Terrapins fed a pass up through a pair of defenders to Ella Gaitan, who went in one-on-one on graduate student goalkeeper Caylie McMahon and laid out to knock the ball in near the right post.
Michigan controlled possession for periods throughout the game, particularly in the second and third quarters, but struggled to find opportunities in the circle. The Wolverines turned away back-to-back Terp corners late in the second, with junior/sophomore goalkeeper Hala Silverstein making a nice pad save on the latter to deflect the ball high over the cage, and drew consecutive corners of their own early in the third. Freshman Maxine Rogge's shot from the arc was saved on the left post on the first of two chances.
Silverstein and McMahon played a half apiece and posted two saves each. Maryland goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasco also registered two stops to keep the Wolverines off the board.
Michigan will close out its weekend road trip with the final non-conference game of its regular-season slate on Sunday (Sept. 28), taking on Old Dominion at noon at LR Hill Sports Complex in Norfolk, Va.
