ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan baseball head coach Tracy Smith announced Tuesday (July 8) the hiring of Adam Cornwell as the program's new recruiting and player development assistant.
Cornwell joins the Wolverines from the University of Indianapolis after four seasons with the Greyhounds, serving as the team's pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. In his first season coaching with the Greyhounds, he coached the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year. In 2023, his pitching staff improved in every statistical category, including a program-best strikeouts-per-nine-innings mark.
Before coaching at UIndy, he served on the staff at the University of Dayton, where he helped the Flyers reach the Atlantic 10 championship game, secure a second-place finish and achieve the second-most strikeouts in program history over his two seasons. Cornwell started his collegiate coaching career at Iona, where he helped two pitchers earn All-MAAC accolades and set a program record for strikeouts in a season.
Cornwell played for Indianapolis for three seasons before finishing his collegiate career at Pittsburgh. With the Greyhounds, he led the team to a pair of NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and pitched in the team's GLVC Tournament championship game win. He played one year in the Frontier League with the Traverse City Beach Bums before earning a master's in athletic coaching education at Ball State in 2019.
He graduated from UIndy with a bachelor's in sport management in 2016.
