LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Tate Carey of the University of Michigan baseball team was named a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Freshman All-America first-team selection, the organization announced Monday (June 9).
Carey finished the season with a 9-0 record, becoming just the third freshman in program history with nine or more wins. He pitched a no-hitter earlier in the season against Akron, facing the minimum number of batters, and tallied four strikeouts. Over the course of the season, Carey held a team-leading 3.63 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. He pitched 57.0 innings with most coming in the back half of the season and totaled 51 strikeouts. The freshman started seven games and appeared in 18 total contests.
He is the first Wolverine to earn freshman All-America honors since Mitch Voit in 2023 from D1Baseball.com. The last NCBWA Freshman All-America selection was Wille Weiss in 2019. Carey is just the third Wolverine to earn NCBWA Freshman All-America first-team honors, joining utility player Jacob Cronenworth in 2013 and shortstop Jake Bivens in 2015.
