ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team hit a trio of home runs, but dropped the series opener 8-7 to Indiana on Thursday night (May 15) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (32-19, 15-12 Big Ten) was led offensively by home runs from Mitch Voit, Jeter Ybarra and Noah Miller. Voit's came in the second inning and was part of a two-hit, two-run, three-RBI day. Ybarra and Miller both added two hits, with Ybarra adding three RBI and Benny Casillas went 2-for-4 with two runs. Starter Kurt Barr (6-5) was touched for seven runs on seven hits over the first 2.2 innings, and Max Debiec allowed one run over 2.2 innings of his own. Dylan Vigue pitched the final 3.2 innings and held the Hoosiers scoreless while adding four strikeouts.
Indiana (29-22, 14-13 Big Ten) jumped out to an early lead with three hits across the first four batters, plating two. U-M quickly answered as Casillas led off the bottom of the first with a single. After a strikeout, Voit homered on a 1-2 count to tie the game at two.
The Hoosiers took the lead back in the second after a leadoff walk and single. A fielder's choice loaded the bases, and another fielder's choice scored a run. Barr escaped thanks to a 3-4 double play, but IU held a 3-2 advantage. Indiana piled on four runs on four hits in the third inning to take a 7-2 lead.
Debiec entered for Barr with two outs in the third and allowed a run before a 6-4-3 double play bolstered a scoreless IU fourth, and he followed with an unblemished fifth.
The Wolverines got four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Voit's one-out double to right field was followed by Cole Caruso's second hit of the day to put runners at the corners. Ybarra and Miller hit back-to-back homers -- both to right field -- to cut the U-M deficit to 7-6. Ybarra's blast was his seventh of the season and Miller's was the first of his career.
IU immediately answered with a solo home run to lead off the sixth to extend its lead to two runs. Vigue took the mound with one out and a runner on first and with one pitch got out of the inning with a 3-6-1 double play.
U-M loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but a groundout helped Indiana escape with its lead intact. Vigue struck out two in the seventh, but the Wolverines mustered only a two-out single in the bottom half.
In the eighth, Vigue allowed a one-out, but the Wolverines turned their fourth double play of the game to escape without a run. Casillas doubled to open the bottom of the frame and advanced to third after a ball got stuck in the catcher's equipment. Voit grounded out, but Casillas scored to bring the Wolverines to within one, 8-7.
Vigue pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning and tallied his fourth strikeout. Ybarra hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth, but a flyout and two strikeouts ended the game.
Michigan will return to action against Indiana on Friday (May 16) in the second game of the series. First pitch from the Wilpon Complex is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
