ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Mount St. Mary's with a 10-0, seven-inning win on Sunday afternoon (April 13) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Tate Carey (6-0) earned the win for Michigan (22-14), tossing five shutout innings with seven strikeouts while allowing five baserunners. Brandon Mann and Preston Barr each added a scoreless frame to close out the win. Offensively, the Wolverines scored 10 runs on 10 hits with four players recording multi-hit games and 10 different players scoring a run. Jonathan Kim led the team with three RBIs, and Robert Hamchuk came off the bench with two hits, including the walk-off single.
Mount St. Mary's (14-20) opened the game with back-to-back singles, but Carey struck out the next two batters after a sacrifice bunt moved runners into scoring position to keep the game scoreless.
Michigan answered in the bottom of the first by batting around and scoring four runs on one hit. Benny Casillas singled to open the frame, and after a walk and hit-by-pitch, Jeter Ybarra drew a walk to bring home the first run. Cole Caruso reached on a fielder's choice to score another, and walks to Tyler Inge and Brayden Jefferis forced in two more runs. A flyout ended the inning with the bases loaded.
Carey allowed two more baserunners in the second but followed with a 1-2-3 third, striking out two. U-M tacked on two more runs in the third when Matt Spear singled and scored on a base hit from Greg Pace Jr., who later came home on a single by Casillas to make it 6-0.
Both teams were scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings. Inge doubled with two outs in the fifth but was stranded. Mann entered in the sixth and struck out three, working around two baserunners.
Michigan extended its lead in the bottom of the sixth. Hamchuk singled and, after two outs and two walks, Jonathan Kim delivered a three-run double to right center. A groundout ended the inning with the Wolverines leading 9-0.
Barr worked a clean seventh inning, aided by a 6-4-3 double play. In the bottom half, Inge singled and came around to score on Hamchuk's RBI single to secure the run-rule victory.
Michigan will return to action Tuesday (April 15) against Toledo at Fifth Third Field, home of the Toledo Mud Hens. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with the game streaming live on ESPN+.
