TOLEDO, Ohio -- The University of Michigan baseball team run-ruled Toledo 10-0 on Tuesday night (April 15) at Fifth Third Field in seven innings.
Michigan (23-14) was led on the mound by Cade Connolly, who pitched six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and allowed just two baserunners. Benny Casillas led Michigan with three hits and added two runs. Jeter Ybarra homered and added another hit, and Mitch Voit scored three runs.
The Wolverines opened the game with back-to-back singles, and Casillas came around to score on a throwing error by the second baseman. Voit reached on a fielder's choice, advanced on a single from Cole Caruso, and scored on a wild pitch.
Toledo (13-22) was hitless through the first two innings and singled with two outs in the third for its first baserunner. U-M tallied one baserunner in the second, third, and fourth innings but could not add to the lead.
Michigan broke the game open in the fifth, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring five runs on four hits. Casillas got it started with a one-out double, and Brayden Jefferis followed with a triple to right center to drive him in. Voit added an RBI single to plate Jefferis, then advanced on an error that allowed Colby Turner to reach. After a strikeout, Ybarra delivered the big blow — a three-run home run down the rightfield line to put Michigan ahead 7-0. Connolly then struck out the side in the bottom of the frame.
Both teams were scoreless in the sixth with one baserunner each as Casillas reached on a two-out single, and the Rockets drew a walk.
In the seventh, Michigan added three more runs with two walks and a single to open the inning. A double from Noah Miller brought home Voit and Turner, and a sacrifice fly from Tyler Inge scored Caruso.
Dylan Vigue pitched a scoreless seventh inning with a game-ending strikeout to complete the run-rule victory.
Michigan will return home and begin a three-game series on Friday (April 18) against Iowa for Backyard Baseball Night, with first pitch at 6 p.m., streaming live on B1G+.
