U-M Offense on Display in Seven-Inning Win Over Purdue in Series Opener

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- An offensive surge and a complete game from David Lally Jr. led the University of Michigan baseball team to a 13-3, seven-inning win over Purdue on Friday afternoon (March 21) at Alexander Field in the series opener.
Michigan (12-9, 4-3 Big Ten) was led by Lally, who pitched a complete game scattering three hits and three runs across seven innings of work with three strikeouts. Offensively, eight of the nine Wolverines tallied hits in the contest with five players collecting multiple hits. Colby Turner led U-M with three hits, two RBI and a run. Mitch Voit scored three times, had two hits and was intentionally walked twice. Benny Casillas and Jeter Ybarra each had two runs and two hits; Ybarra added three RBI.
Purdue (18-3, 2-2 Big Ten) took the lead in the bottom of first on a two-out solo home run.
U-M's bats came alive over the next two innings, sending 19 batters to the plate and scoring 10 runs on nine hits. AJ Rausch opened the third inning with a leadoff walk and the next four Wolverines reached on singles and an intentional walk. Ybarra's single gave U-M a 2-1 lead and Turner's added to it scoring Voit. A fielder's choice by Matt Spear scored Ybarra from third to give Michigan a 4-1 lead.
Michigan batted around in the fourth inning. With one out, Rausch singled, Casillas doubled and Voit was intentionally walked to load the bases. Ybarra scored Rausch with a sacrifice fly, while Turner and Caruso singled with scored two more. Spear's three-run homer to right-center put U-M on top 10-1.
The Boilermakers got one back in the bottom of the frame with a solo home run, but Lally limited the damage. U-M added to the lead in the fifth inning on a Voit home run and a Caruso sac fly to push the score to 12-2. Purdue scored one in the bottom of the fifth on a passed ball.
Will Rogers capped the scoring with a sixth-inning leadoff home run to put Michigan back up 10 runs, 13-3. Lally was strong once again in the sixth and was helped by his defense with a 5-4-3 inning-ending double play.
Purdue drew a two-out walk, but Lally fanned the final batter looking to end the game.
Michigan will finish its series against the Boilermakers with a Saturday (March 22) doubleheader. Game one will start at 1 p.m., with game two slated for 4:30 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on B1G+.
