Michigan Tripped Up in Midweek Matchup with Western Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team dropped a midweek contest to Western Michigan, 6-0, at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, on Tuesday afternoon (March 18).
Michigan (11-9) utilized three pitchers, each throwing three innings. Grant Bradley (0-1) earned the start, allowing one earned run. Josh Kasner followed with three scoreless innings before Tate Carey surrendered three runs on six hits. Cole Caruso and Robert Hamchuk accounted for U-M's only hits in the contest.
Western Michigan (2-16) put its first two batters on base via free passes, but a 5-4-3 double play and a flyout kept the Broncos scoreless through one. Hamchuk singled with one out in the first inning, but a groundout and a foul flyout ended the frame. U-M had another scoring opportunity after a 1-2-3 inning from Bradley, drawing two walks with two outs in the second, but a strikeout stranded both runners.
The Broncos broke through in the third inning, scoring three runs on one hit and one error. U-M struggled to respond, recording just one baserunner over the next three innings. WMU added to its lead in the seventh with one run on two hits and a hit-by-pitch.
Caruso singled with one out in the seventh inning, but a foul flyout and a flyout left him stranded. Benny Casillas drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the eighth, but Michigan was unable to capitalize, going down in order. The Broncos added two insurance runs in the ninth with a two-run home run, and U-M could not mount a comeback, going down in order in the bottom half.
Michigan will head on the road for a conference series against Purdue beginning on Friday (March 21) at 4 p.m., streaming live on B1G+.
