ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team was unable to take advantage of a strong defensive start to the game on Friday (May 10), dropping the first matchup of the series against the Purdue Boilermakers, 4-0, at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (26-24, 11-8 Big Ten) was led on the mound by Kurt Barr, who struck out a personal-best seven batters -- six of which being consecutively, including the complete side of the second inning -- in a 6.2 inning performance. He scattered four hits across the contest, but suffered the loss falling to 5-3 on the season. The top three of the U-M order each tallied a hit with Stephen Hrustich reaching base three times.
Both teams had just one baserunner in the first two innings with Dylan Stanton recording the first hit of the contest with a single in the bottom of the second inning. In the bottom of the third, U-M loaded the bases on two singles and a walk after two flyouts. The Wolverines were unable to convert as a groundout ended the inning. The Boilermakers got baserunners on in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but Barr was able to keep Purdue scoreless.
Hrustich singled to left field with one out in the top of the sixth and moved to third after a wild pitch and a groundout, but another groundout ended the inning for the Wolverines.
Purdue broke the defensive stalemate in the top of the seventh inning, scoring three runs off a home run over the left field wall and an RBI single to right-center field. The Wolverines had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth after a two-out walk and double from Collin Priest which brought the tying run to the plate. Another groundout ended the inning and left two Wolverines on base. A solo shot in the top of the ninth gave Purdue an extra insurance run.
The Wolverines will fight to even the series on Saturday (May 11), with first pitch against the Boilermakers scheduled for 2 p.m. The game will be streamed live on Big Ten+.
