ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A pair of late-game home runs propelled the University of Michigan baseball team to a 6-4 victory over Kent State in 11 innings on Tuesday (Apr. 30) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
With the Wolverines trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Dernedde hit a one-out single. Two batters later, Mitch Voit came to the plate as pinch-hitter with U-M down to its last out. He launched a two-run home run to left-center and tied the game, sending it to extra frames.
Brandon Mann came out of the bullpen in the 10th inning and tossed two shutout innings to set the Wolverines up in the bottom of the 11th. With Trevor Kilinski at first, Stephen Hrustich stepped to the plate and sent a 1-0 offering to left field and made Mann (1-0) and Michigan (24-21) winners. Hrustich's heroics came as part of a team leading three-hit game.
Sachem Ramos threw two scoreless innings to start the game before being relieved in the third by Zach Slayden. The Golden Flashes struck first, scoring twice in the frame on two hits and an error to take a 2-0 lead.
The bottom of the fourth saw the Wolverines tie things up after a sacrifice fly from Mack Timbrook plated Collin Priest and later, a Kent State throwing error allowed Dernedde to cross home.
Three frames of scoreless action gave way to a Kent State run in both the eighth and ninth innings, pushing its advantage to 4-2. U-M threatened in the bottom of the eighth, but came up empty. Jacob Denner took the ball in the ninth and fired a scoreless inning to give U-M a chance.
The Wolverines travel to East Lansing on Friday (May 3) to start a three game series against Michigan State. First pitch is scheduled at 6 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
