EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell 3-2 in a 10-inning pitchers' duel to Michigan State on Friday night (May 3rd) at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field in the series opener.
Michigan (24-22, 10-6 Big Ten) got a quality start from Chase Allen, as he scattered five hits and allowed two runs across seven innings pitched in a no-decision.
The Wolverine offense struggled and tallied just three hits on the day. Cole Caruso and Mitch Voit both doubled and scored in the contest.
Michigan State (20-22, 8-8 Big Ten) was led by starter Joseph Dzierwa on the mound who went eight innings and stuck out nine. The Spartan offense tallied three runs on seven hits and walked off the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th.
In the top of the first, Voit doubled with one out for U-M's first hit of the day. He advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a balk by the MSU pitcher to give U-M an early lead. The Spartans got the run back immediately after a two-out walk and a pair of singles brought a runner home in the bottom of the frame.
Both pitchers settled in with just six total combined base runners after the first inning through the seventh. One of MSU's hits was a solo home run in the fifth to take the lead.
Caruso opened up the eighth inning with a double and -- after a strikeout -- advanced to third on a groundout. The MSU starter was again called for a balk and Caruso came home which knotted the game at two. Jacob Denner relieved Allen in the eighth and fired back-to-back 1-2-3 innings to force extras.
U-M went down in order in the tenth before MSU walked it off in the bottom of the frame. The Spartans strung together two singles and an intentional walk to load the bases with one out and won 3-2 on a sacrifice fly to right field that drove the winning run home.
The Wolverines will look to even the series against Michigan State on Saturday (May 4) at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field with the first pitch at 3:30 p.m. and the game streaming live on B1G+.
