CONWAY, S.C. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell 19-6 to No.18-ranked Coastal Carolina on Saturday night (March 9) at Springs Brooks Stadium.
Michigan (5-10) used seven different pitchers with Chase Allen earning the start. Three Wolverines homered -- Stephen Hrustich hit his fourth of the season, Kyle Dernedde hit his first as a Wolverine and Joe Longo hit his second of the series. Dernedde led the team in hits with two while both Hrustich and Longo tallied two RBI.
Coastal Carolina (12-2) scored 11 total runs across the first three innings, including a seven-run third inning, and scored in every inning but the fourth. The Chanticleers' starter pitched five innings and allowed no earned runs and just two Wolverines hits.
The Wolverines went down in order in the first while Coastal Carolina scored three in the first with a two-run home run and an RBI double.
Michigan got its first run of the game in the second inning when Jonathan Kim led off the inning with a double, advanced on an error and scored on a groundout by Bradley Navarro. The Chanticleers matched U-M's run with a leadoff double of their own and scored on a wild pitch after the runner advanced on a sacrifice bunt to regain its three-run lead, 4-1.
U-M went quiet offensively, tallying just three baserunners over the next three innings while Coastal scored eight runs over that span -- with seven coming in the third inning -- to take an 11-1 lead after three. Coastal Carolina added another in the fifth with a leadoff home run.
Mitch Voit drew a leadoff walk to start the sixth inning and scored on Hrustich's home run to left field, his fourth of the year. The Chanticleers got one run back in the sixth to hold a 12-4 lead.
Dernedde led off the seventh inning with his first home run as a Wolverine, but Coastal Carolina added to its lead with a two-run home run, pulling ahead 15-4. Michigan went down in order in the eighth, and the Chanticleers added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
U-M tried to start a ninth-inning rally as Cooper Mullens laced a leadoff single to right-center, followed by a Longo home run down the left field line, but Michigan could not add more and fell 19-6.
The Wolverines will wrap up the three game series against Coastal Carolina on Sunday (March 10) at 1 p.m. at Springs Brooks Stadium. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
