
Trio of Hat Tricks Powers Michigan in Rout of Jacksonville in Season Opener

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team routed Jacksonville 19-1 on Saturday (Feb 10) in its season opener at Rock Stadium.
Michigan (1-0) got goals from 10 different players, with three netting hat tricks -- Jill Smith scored a team-best four goals, while Kaylee Dyer and Jane Fetterolf each recorded posted three. Caroline Davis and Ceci Stein notched two goals each. Smith recorded six points with her four goals and two assists, while Dyer and Fetterolf each had five points.
Defensively, Fetterolf picked up three ground balls and Maya Rutherford had two. Erin O'Grady earned the start in goal and recorded eight saves and the victory.
On the draw, Maddie Burns won a team-best four draw controls and Lily Montemarano won three.
The Wolverines opened the game on a 5-0 run, including back-to-back goals from Fetterolf before JU (0-1) netted its first of the game. Smith made a big play on the defensive end and netted her second goal of the game with less than three minutes to play in the first quarter before Davis found Josie Gooch and U-M took a 7-1 lead into the second quarter.
Montemarano opened the second quarter with a quick goal before Smith recorded her first hat trick of the season and Dyer added her second goal to start a running clock as Michigan held an 11-1 lead with 8:21 remaining in the first half. Smith brought her tally to four as the Wolverines took a comfortable 12-1 advantage into the halftime break.
Michigan added three goals and extended its lead to 15-1 at the end of the third quarter. The Wolverines added four final goals in the final quarter, including two from Stein, to take the 19-1 victory.
Michigan plays its second road contest Wednesday (Feb. 14) when it travels to Cincinnati for a 3 p.m. game at Nippert Stadium.
