ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team secured its first top-five win in 13 years with a 2-0 victory over No. 2-ranked Maryland on Friday (Oct. 25) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Bryce Blevins led Michigan offensively, assisting on the first goal and scoring the second from the penalty spot. Patrick O'Toole netted his first career goal to put the Wolverines ahead, with Matthew Fisher adding an assist on O'Toole's tally. In goal, Isaiah Goldson recorded a career-high nine saves to achieve his fourth shutout of the season.
Maryland (8-2-5, 5-1-2 Big Ten) earned a penalty in the sixth minute, but Goldson stopped the attempt, keeping the game scoreless. Three minutes later, Blevins sent a well-placed ball into the box, finding O'Toole, who headed it into the bottom corner to give U-M a 1-0 lead. The Terrapins took four of the next five shots, though none were on target. Goldson made his second save in the 42nd minute, maintaining the 1-0 lead into halftime.
After a handball call in the penalty box, Blevins converted his second penalty attempt of the season to extend Michigan's lead to 2-0. Maryland gained possession control, but Goldson held strong, stopping two point-blank shots in the 52nd minute to keep the Terrapins scoreless. As the game passed the hour mark, Goldson continued his stellar performance, making saves in the 66th, 67th, and 74th minutes. Michigan (7-3-5, 2-3-4 Big Ten) controlled possession in the final 10 minutes, allowing only two shots to seal the win for the Maize and Blue.
