The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team (6-2-2, 2-1 Big Ten) hosts a two-match week beginning with a tilt against No. 4 Penn State (8-0-1, 3-0 Big Ten) on Thursday (Sept. 28) at 7 p.m., followed a noon match against Maryland (3-3-5, 0-2-1 Big Ten) on Sunday (Oct. 1). Thursday's match is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Night, while Sunday's match is U-M's Pride Game. Both contests will be streamed live on B1G+.
Notes
• Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Sparkowski ranks No. 11 in the country with a .883 save percentage and, is 46th in goals-against average (.700) and 49th in saves per game (5.30). Her six clean sheets on the campaign top the Big Ten and rank sixth in the NCAA.
• Ranked No. 22, U-M is in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and sits 24th in the NCAA RPI entering the week.
• Senior Sammi Woods leads Michigan in goals with five on 15 shots for a team-leading shooting percentage of .333 percent. She owns five multi-goal games in her career and is the team's career active leader with 21 markers.
• Freshman Gabrielle Prych is second on the team in goals with four. She ranks tied for sixth in the country in goals for a freshman and is second on the squad in shots with 14, leading the team with 10 shots on goal.
• Penn State's trip to Ann Arbor marks the first time a top-five team has visited since the 2004 season when U-M hosted No. 2 Notre Dame on Oct. 28, 2004.
• The contest is the first since Oct. 16, 2016, vs. No. 15 Wisconsin that U-M will host a top-15 opponent while also being ranked.
• Michigan is 2-1-1 on the year against ranked opponents, with wins coming at No. 11 Notre Dame (Sept. 7) and at No. 18 Northwestern (Sept. 21). U-M also is 3-0 at home on the year, outscoring teams 6-2 in such matches.
• Michigan has scored 11 goals on the season, with all but two coming between the 34th and 62nd minutes of play. Prych's score in the seventh minute against Northwestern (Sept. 21) was the fastest, while sophomore Abby Zugay's header goal in the 87th minute at Illinois was the latest.
• In terms of RPI, Penn State checks in at No. 1. Indiana (17), Upcoming opponents Michigan State (40), Iowa (42), Rutgers (46), Ohio State (51), and Maryland (139) are also represented.
• Penn State leads Michigan in the all-time series, sporting a 26-7-7 record. U-M completed the season sweep of Penn State in 2021, beating the Nittany Lions twice in 10 days, including a 3-1 win in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament.
• Against Maryland, U-M leads the all-time series 8-1, and had an undefeated record in series history before falling 1-0 at Maryland in 2022.
