CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team earned its first Big Ten road victory of the season Sunday (Sept. 13), shutting out Illinois 2-0 at Demirjian Park.

The Wolverines scored once in each half, with Elle Ervin and Adi Walick converting penalty kicks, while Malia Zillman made three saves to secure the clean sheet.

Michigan (3-1-3, 1-1-0 Big Ten) generated an early opportunity when Ella Jablinskey sent a shot wide in the fifth minute. Illinois (3-1-4, 0-1-1 Big Ten) answered with pressure of its own, forcing Zillman into her first save in the 12th minute. Freshman Melisa Kekic nearly broke through moments later when her attempt struck the left post.

The Wolverines opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Ervin converted from the penalty spot to give U-M a 1-0 advantage. The Maize and Blue carried the lead into halftime after outshooting Illinois 4-3.

Illinois pushed for an equalizer after the break, but Zillman and the Michigan defense held firm. Zillman made two second-half saves, while the Wolverines defended three Illinois corner kicks to preserve the shutout.

U-M doubled its advantage in the 78th minute when Walick converted the Wolverines' second penalty kick of the afternoon to make it 2-0. The goal was Walick's third penalty-kick goal of the season.

Michigan held Illinois scoreless over the final 12 minutes to complete the shutout.

Zillman finished with three saves, while the Wolverines limited Illinois to six shots and three on goal. Michigan recorded seven shots, led by Kekic with a game-high three attempts.

Next up, the Maize and Blue will travel to East Lansing, Mich., to take on in-state rival Michigan State on Sunday (Sept. 20) at 1 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
