EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped its Big Ten Conference opener 1-0 against Northwestern on Thursday evening (Sept. 10) at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.
The contest began with a back-and-forth effort as neither team was able to capitalize on its opportunities. Michigan (2-1-3, 0-1-0 Big Ten) held a 7-3 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes, but the teams went into halftime scoreless.
Michigan continued to create chances in the second half, with Ella Jablinskey, Elle Ervin and Luciana Latino each putting attempts on goal. Northwestern (3-3-2, 1-0-0 Big Ten) broke the scoreless tie in the 85th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines pushed for an equalizer in the closing minutes but were unable to find the back of the net.
Michigan finished with a 12-9 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Ervin led the Wolverines with four shots, while Malia Zillman made three saves in goal.
U-M is back in action Sunday (Sept. 13) at 1 p.m. CT when the Maize and Blue travel to Champaign, Ill., to take on Illinois at Demirjian Park. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
