MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team earned goals from nine different players en route to an 11-0 rout over Central Michigan in its non-conference finale on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 22) at Cristy Freese Field.
Senior Kate McLaughlin scored three goals -- her first collegiate multi-goal game and U-M's first hat trick since Abby Tamer record three against CMU (1-14) last season -- to up her season goal tally to six. She shares U-M's team lead with freshman Kelsey Reviello, who scored on a third-quarter penalty corner. Senior Lindsey Stagg and freshman Abby Burnett both tallied their first collegiate goals in the second half.
It was the Wolverines' largest goal output since scoring 12 against Ball State on Sept. 10, 2021. In all, Michigan (8-7) outshot the Chippewas 50-0 and outcornered them 23-0. It was the first time U-M held an opponent without a shot since the 2021 Ball State game. Junior/sophomore Caylie McMahon and senior Gillian Dumont combined for the shutout -- Michigan's fifth of the season.
Michigan poured on the offense in the first quarter but did not break through until its eighth penalty corner of the game, at 12:28, when freshman Juliette Manzur got her stick on the direct shot from senior Anouk Veen and tipped it high into the cage for her third goal of the season. Veen scored one of her own less than three minutes later and with just one second remaining, at 14:59, with a big corner blast from the top of the arc -- her second this season.
McLaughlin scored her first goal of the season early in the second quarter, at 15:48, on a fast two-on-one break into the circle with junior Alana Richardson, who fed the ball to the right side and McLaughlin banged it in.
The floodgates opened quickly in the second half with three Michigan goals in the opening seven minutes, including back-to-back markers from McLaughlin at 30:26 and 34:07. The Wolverines pushed inside the CMU 25 off the third-quarter whistle; senior Lora Clarke passed the ball to the left side McLaughlin, who ripped a reverse chip to the top right corner of the cage.
Michigan also earned goals from Richardson, Reviello, Stagg, freshman Natalie Millman, Burnett and graduate student Isabella Palde. Reviello and Stagg both converted on direct corner shots -- Stagg on the left side of the arc for the first of her career at 44:44 -- while Burnett tallied her first marker in the aftermath of another Michigan corner at 48:48, corralling the ball and carrying it in on the right baseline.
Thirteen different Wolverine players have now scored goals this season -- 72 percent of U-M's non-redshirting field players.
The Wolverines will wrap up the regular season next Friday (Oct. 27) when they host Michigan State for Senior Day at 6 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field. Admission is free, and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
