ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team earned its first series sweep of the season, edging No. 10 Rutgers, 1-0, in non-conference play on Sunday afternoon (March 28) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Junior Kathryn Peterson, who clinched U-M's shootout win over the Scarlet Knights on Friday (March 26), also scored the game-winning goal in today's series finale off a penalty corner at the 26:04 mark in the second quarter. Peterson inserted then accepted a pass back from senior striker Halle O'Neill and lifted a shot behind Rutgers goalkeeper Gianna Glatz. It was her second goal of the season and fourth game-winner of her career.
Rutgers outshot the Wolverines, 9-6, and outcornered them, 6-5. Michigan denied back-to-back Scarlet Knights penalty corners at the final buzzer -- with three seconds remaining and again with time expired. O'Neill corralled a loose ball on the latter and cleared it out of the circle to end the game.
Junior goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned six saves en route to her second straight shutout win -- and third in six appearances this season -- while Rutgers' Glatz stopped one of two U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines (5-2) will hit the road but remain close next weekend, heading to East Lansing, Mich., for a two-game set against in-state rival Michigan State. The teams will square off at 3 p.m. on Friday (April 2) and 1 p.m. on Sunday (April 4) at Ralph Young Field.
