ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Fifth-year seniors Caitlin Muir and Arielle Weissman along with seniors Erin Garvey, Kaitlyn Mead, and Morgan Whitaker have been named captains of the Michigan women's lacrosse team for the 2022 season, the program announced Tuesday (Nov. 23).
Muir, a four-year starting attacker, returned for her fifth season after being named to the Tewaaraton Watch List and being an Inside Lacrosse Honorable Mention All-American in 2021. The Honeoye Falls, N.Y., native was one of just three players who started all 12 games in the 2021 season, leading the team in points (46) and assists (23). She also ranked second on the team in goals with 23 and had a .800 shots-on-goal percentage putting 48 of her 60 shots on frame.
"Being named captain is such an honor for my last year here at Michigan," said Muir. "This team is a special one and I'm so excited to help lead us to a successful season and beyond."
Weissman also returns for her fifth season after starting nine games in the cage in 2021. The goalie recorded 61 saves and won three games as the starter. She tallied a career-best 14 saves in back-to-back games at Penn State and had 13 ground balls.
"I challenged myself the very first day on this team to one day lead it in a historical direction," said Weissman. "That being said, I am grateful for the confidence my teammates expressed, ultimately giving me the opportunity to do so. I am eager to challenge every individual, on and off the field, to become the absolute best versions of themselves, find enjoyment in the little moments together all while ensuring we remain focused on our collective goals. I believe this team is truly special and I could not be more honored to lead alongside four other incredible captains."
Garvey enters her senior season after appearing in 11 games and earning one start in 2021. The midfielder registered six goals and six assists for 12 points, while causing four turnovers on defense. She scored two goals and added an assist against Johns Hopkins, also while recording a three-point game at Penn State.
"I am super grateful and excited for the opportunity to lead this team as a captain during our 2022 season," stated Garvey. "It is such an honor, and I owe credit to the amazing leaders/mentors I was fortunate enough to learn from over the past three years here at Michigan. This year, our players and coaching staff have been working really hard throughout the offseason and I can't wait to see what we do in 2022."
Mead, a senior midfielder, started 11 games for Michigan in 2021, recording 20 points with 15 goals and five assists and led the team with 36 draw controls. The Sparta, N.J., native also added six ground balls and five caused turnover on the season. Mead had a season-high four points with three goals and an assist against Maryland and also notched a hat trick against Johns Hopkins in 2021.
"I am very honored to be named one of the captains for the 2022 season," Mead said. "I am excited to help lead the team throughout our upcoming season on and off the field."
Whitaker also enters her senior season on the defensive end after appearing in all 12 games (11 starts) in 2021. The Glen Allen, Va., native ranked third on the team in ground balls with 14 and second with 11 caused turnovers. Whitaker had four ground balls and caused two turnovers against Rutgers, while adding two caused turnovers against Johns Hopkins last season.
"I'm extremely excited to help lead this team this year," said Whitaker. "The captains and leaders that came before us have paved the way, and I can't wait to see where we end up in the spring."
