BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team shook off a sluggish start and overcame an early two-goal deficit to defeat Indiana, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 17) at the IU Field Hockey Complex. The decision put U-M back in the win column after it suffered its first loss of the 2021 season two days earlier.
The Hoosiers converted on two penalty corners in the first quarter -- all three of their goals came off the corner attack -- to take a 2-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes of the contest.
Michigan answered promptly in the second, scoring twice in the opening 2:06 of the quarter to even the score. The Wolverines converted on their first penalty corner, at 15:34, when sophomore Anouk Veen buried the direct shot from the top of the circle for her fourth goal of the season. Seniors Kathryn Peterson and Katie Anderson earned assists on the insert and the stop, respectively; both tallied a pair of assists in the game.
Freshman Abby Tamer tallied the equalizer less than two minutes later, at 17:06, on a tip goal in front of the IU cage. Fifth-year senior Halle O'Neill hammered the ball into the circle from the Indiana 25, and Tamer laid out to get her stick on it, redirecting it high and into the cage. It was Tamer's third goal of the season.
The Wolverines took their first lead early in the third, at 34:15, with their first of two penalty-corner goals in the quarter. Tamer ripped a rebound shot on goal, it squeezed past the Hoosier goalkeeper, and Peterson, who inserted to initiate the corner, crashed in to knock the loose ball into the cage -- her fourth goal of the season. Senior Sofia Southam tallied her team-best 16th goal on another corner four minutes later, at 38:12, nailing the direct shot from the left side of the scoring arc.
Michigan tacked on one more in the fourth quarter. Fifth-year senior Emma Tamer went coast to coast with the ball, penetrating the circle and putting a tight-angle shot on goal from the left baseline, and junior Sarah Pyrtek got her stick on it from behind the IU goalie, tipping it in for her third marker of the season.
U-M outshot the Hoosiers 13-6 and outcornered them 7-6 -- and did allow a shot through the second and third quarters. Senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned one save, while IU's Arabella Loveridge stopped five of 10 Wolverine shots on goal.
The Wolverines (12-1, 4-1 Big Ten) will wrap up the home portion of their regular-season slate with a pair of top-10 matchups next weekend at Phyllis Ocker Field. Michigan will host Rutgers at 4:30 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 22) before facing Maryland for Senior Day at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 24). Admission is free, and both games will be streamed live on B1G+.
