ANN ARBOR, Mich. --Â Junior Sarah Stratigakis scored in the third minute of overtime to give the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Utah Valley on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 25) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Junior Samantha DeVecchi took the ball into the 18-yard box on the left side of the field before lifting a pass over Utah Valley defenders onto the foot of Meredith Haakenson, who had a perfectly-placed one-touch tap to Stratigakis. She was wide open on the far left side and buried the ball into the lower portion of the goal.
Stratigakis and sophomore Raleigh Loughman netted their second goals of the season, while Haakenson recorded her fifth point of the year with her assist on the game-winning goal. Freshman Hannah Blake earned her first collegiate point with the assist on Loughman's first-half goal, which gave the Michigan a 1-0 lead. Stratigakis also recorded her second straight three-point match with an assist on Loughman's goal.
In the 29th minute, Blake took the ball down the right side and fired a shot from the corner. Loughman got just enough of her foot on the ball to direct it into the bottom-left corner of the goal.
At the half, Michigan (2-0-0)Â took five shots -- three of them on goal -- and the defense allowed two shots to reach net.
Utah Valley (0-2-0) found the equalizer less than five minutes into the second half to knot the score at 1. Michigan took multiple shots on net in the closing minutes of regulation, but could not get past the Utah Valley keeper and the match went to overtime.
Junior goalkeeper Hillary Beall earned the win with four saves and the Michigan defense allowed just five Utah Valley shots in just under 93 minutes.
Michigan will continue its homestand Friday (Aug. 30) at 5 p.m., when it hosts Florida Gulf Coast at U-M Soccer Stadium. The match will be the opener of a doubleheader with the Michigan men's soccer team, which will take on FGCU at 7:30 p.m. Tickets purchased for the women's match will be good for admission to the men's contest.
